Why Use a GitHub Repository Downloader?

Download any public GitHub repository as a ZIP file. No Git needed.

Updated Aug 2026: GitHub increased the ZIP download size limit for large repos in early 2026, but repos over 100MB still fail to download as ZIP through the browser. Our tool handles this by downloading repo contents in chunks when needed.

Learning & Code Study

Beginners and students download popular open-source projects to read real-world code, study architecture, and understand how professional libraries are structured.

Reusing Open Source

Developers grab starter templates, boilerplates, and utility libraries to accelerate their own projects. A ZIP download is the fastest way to bootstrap new work.

Backup & Archival

Repositories can be archived, made private, renamed, or deleted. Downloading a snapshot keeps a permanent copy of code you depend on or care about.

Offline Development

Air-gapped environments and restricted machines often cannot reach GitHub. A ZIP download transfers a full project onto any machine without network access.

How GitHub Code Download Works

A transparent pipeline from URL to ZIP

1

Repository URL Validation

Your pasted URL is checked to confirm it is a genuine public GitHub repository. The owner and repository name are extracted, and unsupported links such as gists or subdomains are rejected.

URL parsingOwner detectionRepo extraction
2

Default Branch Detection

The GitHub public repository API is queried to read the repository's default branch. Whether it is main, master, or a custom branch, the correct branch is used for the archive.

3

Official Archive URL

The tool builds GitHub's official archive URL for that branch the exact endpoint GitHub's Download ZIP button points at and shows the repository details on a result card.

4

Direct ZIP Download

Your browser downloads the ZIP straight from GitHub's codeload CDN. Nothing about the source code ever passes through this website.

Direct deliveryNo proxyNo data retention

Correct Branch

Default branch is read from the live GitHub API, so repositories that still use master or a custom default branch download correctly.

Performance

Metadata lookups complete in under a second, and the ZIP streams directly from GitHub's CDN without buffering through our server.

Privacy

Repository URLs are processed in memory and immediately discarded. No URLs, metadata, or files are ever stored or logged.

Compatibility

Works with any public GitHub repository across all platforms. Large repositories, submodules, and binary assets behave exactly as on GitHub.

About Content Availability

Only public repositories can be downloaded. Private, deleted, and renamed-beyond-redirect repositories require authentication and cannot be archived by this tool. Always respect open-source licenses and the rights of repository owners.

What Does the Downloaded ZIP Contain?

A full snapshot of the default branch's working tree

The ZIP contains the source files available in the repository's default branch, exactly as GitHub structures them: every folder, source file, configuration file, documentation page, and asset tracked in that branch.

Git history, remote branches, and unmerged pull requests are not included the archive is a snapshot of the branch's working tree, generated and served by GitHub's own archive service. This means large repositories, monorepos, and repositories with binary assets behave exactly as they do with the official Download ZIP button.

Who Downloads GitHub Repositories?

Real use cases across the developer community

Students Learning to Code

Studying Open Source

I download popular projects to read real production code. Seeing how frameworks handle edge cases teaches me more than any tutorial.

Course Projects

My professor assigned us to study a React component library. Downloading the ZIP was way faster than figuring out Git for the first time.

Open Source Contributors

Bootstrapping Projects

I grab boilerplate and starter repos to scaffold new projects. A ZIP download is quicker than cloning when I just need the files, not the Git history.

Vendoring Dependencies

For air-gapped builds, I download dependency repos as ZIPs and vendor them into the build environment so the pipeline doesn't break.

Team Leads

Audits & Reviews

Our security team snapshots the exact code we ship for review, including config files and dependencies. Having the ZIP makes the audit trail concrete.

Legacy Backups

We archive public repos our products depend on so builds never break if a project gets deleted or goes private.

Anyone Who Doesn't Use Git

Documentation

I need to read code examples from a repo for a blog post. A ZIP download lets me browse everything without installing anything or creating a GitHub account.

Sharing Projects

I sent a client a starter template from GitHub. They don't code, so a ZIP file they could extract was the only option that made sense.
