How does the GitHub Code Downloader work?
The tool never scrapes GitHub's pages and never downloads files through an intermediate server. Instead it follows GitHub's own download mechanism, exactly like the Code → Download ZIP button on the repository page:
When you submit a URL, the backend validates that it is a genuine GitHub repository URL and extracts the owner and repository name. It then calls the GitHub public repository API (GET /repos/{owner}/{repo}) to read the repository's default_branch. That branch whether it is main, master, or a custom default is used to build the official archive URL github.com/{owner}/{repo}/archive/refs/heads/{branch}.zip. Your browser downloads the ZIP directly from GitHub's codeload CDN, so nothing about the source code ever passes through this website.
Can I download any GitHub repository?
The GitHub Code Downloader works with any public GitHub repository. If a repository is public, its archive can be created without authentication, so the tool has no dependencies on tokens or accounts.
Private repositories are a different story: they require GitHub authentication and explicit authorization, which this tool deliberately never requests. For the same reason, repositories that have been deleted, renamed beyond a redirect, or made private after the fact will not be downloadable the tool reports a clear message instead of failing silently.
What does the downloaded ZIP contain?
The ZIP contains the source files available in the repository's default branch, exactly as GitHub structures them on disk: all folders, source code files, configuration files, documentation, and assets tracked in that branch. Git history, remote branches, and unmerged pull requests are not included the archive is a snapshot of the default branch's working tree.
The ZIP is generated and served by GitHub's own archive service, so it uses the same repository format you would get from the official Download ZIP button. This also means large repositories with submodules, binary assets, or generated files behave exactly as they do on GitHub.
